Canasta 13 Dining Chair
The Canasta 13 Dining Chair designed by Patricia Urquiola takes the iconic form from the original Canasta range and creates a thoroughly new aesthetic by changing the structure of the polyethylene weave. Rather than the enlarged iconic Viennese pattern of polyethylene used for the original Canasta collection, Urquiola has selected a vertically-oriented rectilinear weave pattern for the Canasta 13.
The composition of the polyethylene for the Canasta 13 is a mottled gray/brown – referred to as Tortora (“turtle dove” in Italian) referring to the mottled colors of the bird’s feathers. The color is muted with a wonderful built-in patina that creates the feel of driftwood. The vertical orientation of the weave engenders an exquisite moiré effect within the forms as light and space literally pass through the pieces.
Like the original Canasta collection, in order to obtain the expert level of craftsmanship, B&B Italia also creates Canasta 13 in the Philippines – known and celebrated for its centuries-old tradition of three-dimensional weaving.
The Canasta 13 collection includes a rectilinear sofa in two sizes; a sculptural ovoid sofa with a canopy option; two sizes of lounge chair; a dining chair; and, reminiscent of her playful 2002 collection of Fat Fat-Lady Fat tables, a group of similarly-shaped side and coffee tables.
The Canasta 13 Dining Chair noted here features an internal structure in powder-coated aluminum with a interlacing of Tortora woven polyethylene. Seat cushions are composed of shaped polyurethane covered in water-repellent polyester fiber; loose back cushions available in two sizes are filled with water-repellent polyester fiber.
