The Fat-Sofa lounge chair designed by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia is available in three versions – each is composed of an internal frame in tubular steel and plastic covered in Bayfit flexible cold-shaped polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam, as well as shaped polyurethane foam of varying densities and polyester fiber wadding. All Fat lounge chairs are available in a number of textile and leather upholstery options including the option of also combining textiles in different colorways on the same piece as well as the combination of leather and textiles on certain pieces.
Patricia Urquiola’s extensive additions to her range – affectionately known as Fat – find their origins in her Fat Fat-Lady Fat range from 2002 that featured a series of poufs of varying sizes with expansive “plump” base shapes reminiscent of Morrocan ottomans, the surfaces of which could also function as tables. The popularity of this sensuously curved form – a seemingly amorphous base that tapers upward toward the horizontal plane – became the basis for Urquiola’s innovative seating shapes. The Fat seating series now features a sofa, wide chaise, lounge chairs in various sizes, and three sizes of poufs. The bases of all pieces in the Fat collection are characterized by their aforementioned plumpness; the seating backs with their comparatively thin profile become the perfect visual foil to the base form. Backs can be paired with loose pillows in various sizes.
