Accordo Coffee Table
The Accordo coffee table was designed by Charlotte Perriand to accompany a 1985 retrospective of the designer’s work at the Musée des Arts-Décoratifs, Paris, and was put into production by Cassina in 2009 as part of its I Maestri Collection. Perriand’s inspiration for Accordo’s atypical form came from the designer’s observations of the natural world. In this instance, the table is an echo of a stone eroded by water – an object that Perriand personally photographed.
The Accordo coffee table was specifically designed as a low table so that the unique design can be viewed both in profile as well as looking down onto the table’s surface. The ellipsoid shape features canted ends – one end of the ellipse cants inwardly down; the other end cants outwardly up. The thickness of the top is constantly curving along its perimeter to become the inverse of its originating cant. The Accordo coffee table is available in matte black lacquered wood.
One of the tastemakers of International Style, Charlotte Perriand is a French architect and furniture designer whose decade-long collaboration with Le Corbusier resulted in a wide array of classic furniture pieces that are the epitome of Modern Design. Born in France in 1903, Perriand first made a name for herself at the age of 24, when she designed a bar for the 1927 Salone d’Automne with nickel-plated copper and anodized aluminum. It established her as a designer to watch. This soon translated into 10 years of working with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Many of the signature pieces that came out of the Le Corbusier studio were designed by Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret, including the LC1 Chair and the LC4 Chaise Lounge. Over time, her work turned away from the materials of steel tubing, and she began incorporating wood, specifically bamboo, into her designs. Her Tokyo Chaise Lounge is a well-known example of this aesthetic. Her architectural designs include the conference rooms for the United Nations in Geneva and the London offices for Air France.
