The Plurima bookcase is a striking freestanding storage unit/room divider through which Perriand illustrates her keen, intuitive understanding of volumes and her mastery at manipulating them. One’s initial impression of The Plurima bookcase is totemic – the designer’s organization of the thick vertical supports having been juxtaposed with the thinner horizontal expanses. She has further objectified these volumes through the graphic addition of color – black, white, and anodized aluminum. Perriand has assigned “weight” to all of these colors – the visually “lighter” white and aluminum are more prevalent throughout Plurima’s compositional construction; the “heavier” black is used to punctuate the vertical ends of the rectilinear cabinet form as well as the right-facing half of the vertical supports. Perriand has even tempered the “weight” of the right-facing black vertical supports of the Plurima bookcase by selectively applying white to their sides – these supports appear black when viewed frontally; when viewed at an angle, black and white are fused as engaging delineated planes.
The rectilinear cabinet of the Plurima bookcase form provides the option of concealed storage with modular aluminum sliding panels. As the Plurima bookcase was designed to be freestanding and accessible from all sides – Perriand’s moveable horizontal panels also encourage the user to visually manipulate volume. By sliding the panels, the user can define the perception of the cabinet’s depth – compartartmentalizing the interior volume or allowing space to literally pass through it.
The Plurima bookcase is available in two sizes – low and tall versions. Its composition is solid natural oak with several vertical supports in black and white lacquer. The sliding cabinet panels are satin anodized aluminum. Please contact CONTEXT at 800.886.0867 to review these variants along with associated lead times.
