The Bigfoot table is part of Philipp Mainzer’s innovative and early work for e15 since the mid-1990s has enabled new aesthetics within the time-honored tradition of crafting furniture in wood. The precise and thoughtful arrangement of grain, striation, imperfection, and rectilinear boards associated with the choice of the wood itself, further combined with the re-thinking of how vertical supports “can” interact with horizontal plane expanses, continues to challenge preconceived notions of “how” a wooden table can look. The designer’s critically-acclaimed Bigfoot dining table from 1994 remains an iconic example of Mainzer’s brilliant manipulation of material and resulting form.
Bigfoot table features a 1.6” solid wood top, which is firmly mounted to the wooden support frame. The top is made up of a total of seven to eight boards (depending upon depth selected) and runs flush with the top of each of the massive post-like legs – the top of each transforms into an element of the horizontal expanse at each corner of the Bigfoot table. The table legs are massive – 5.25” square each – and are formed from wood harvested from the center of the tree that features the wonderfully enigmatic arrangement of annual growth rings. The juxtaposition of the grain of the horizontal boards with the spectacularly irregular growth rings of the post legs is just extraordinary. Given all of the unique natural characteristics of the wood used, let alone the way in which the material has been assembled, each Bigfoot table is resultingly unique. The Bigfoot table’s profound “blockiness” becomes a perfect foil for a number of types of dining chairs allowing additional opportunities to further personalize your overall dining aesthetic.
