Applique à Volet Pivotant

$393

A wall sconce designed by Charlotte Perriand in the early 1960s, the Applique à Volet Pivotant is a much-loved piece by collectors that commands top prices at major auction houses. Nemo Lighting, in collaboration with Perriand’s daughter, Pernette, has faithfully re-created this design as a production piece. The Applique à Volet Pivotanta features a white painted metal mount and a metal panel that conceals the bulb and functions as a screen allowing the user to pivot the panel to vary the volume and direction of diffused light. The use of colored metal panels is reminiscent of Perriand’s Nuage storage unit designs, where the panels were designed to shift the volume of space. With the Applique à Volet Pivotant, Perriand has similarly used colored panels as a mechanism for shifting the volume of light.

One of the tastemakers of International Style, Charlotte Perriand is a French architect and furniture designer whose decade-long collaboration with Le Corbusier resulted in a wide array of classic furniture pieces that are the epitome of Modern Design. Born in France in 1903, Perriand first made a name for herself at the age of 24, when she designed a bar for the 1927 Salone d’Automne with nickel-plated copper and anodized aluminum. It established her as a designer to watch. This soon translated into 10 years of working with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Many of the signature pieces that came out of the Le Corbusier studio were designed by Le Corbusier, Perriand and Jeanneret, including the LC1 Chair and the LC4 Chaise Lounge. Over time, her work turned away from the materials of steel tubing, and she began incorporating wood, specifically bamboo, into her designs. Her Tokyo Chaise Lounge is a well-known example of this aesthetic. Her architectural designs include the conference rooms for the United Nations in Geneva and the London offices for Air France.

The hard-wired version of Applique à Volet Pivotant is available with a pivoting panel in Black, Red, Yellow, Blue, or Anodized aluminum.  The Applique a Volet Pivotant is also available in a corded version, allowing the user to power the wall sconce from an existing wall outlet.
