The .03 chair designed in 1998 by Maarten Van Severen for Vitra features a slim profile form that integrates the seat, back, and front legs into a single fluid line – the resulting visually continuous form is supported by legs composed of steel and die-cast aluminum. Its shell features a flexible integral polyurethane foam construction that adapts to the user’s body – upon leaning back in the chair, the upper part of the backrest yields slightly. Built-in leaf springs provide added resilience to the backrest.
The .03 chair is part of a seating collection that Maarten Van Severen developed with Vitra that includes a studio chair, cantilever dining, and lounge chairs, as well as a sculptural chaise lounge. The chair’s beautiful yet simple form and atypical task chair appearance make it an ideal choice for a home or office.
Born in Antwerp in 1956, Maarten Van Severen spent most of his career as a furniture maker. After attending the Art Academy in Ghent to study architecture, Van Severen made his first piece of furniture in 1986. A year later he developed his own furniture workshop in Ghent, combining hand-produced work along with semi-industrial production. In 1990 Van Severen partnered with Rem Koolhaas to work on the Villa dall’Ava outside of Paris. Design collaborations extended to lighting design for Target in 1997, as well as furniture pieces for Vitra in 1996. Van Severen concentrates his work on refining the design of basic furniture pieces, the chair, the table, the chaise lounge, as well as shelving and cabinetry.
The .03 chair noted here is available in Basic-Dark polyurethane foam with black powder coated legs and is a favorite at CONTEXT.
