or Call to Order

The Surface Table, designed by Vincent Van Duysen for B&B Italia, is part of a collection of low rectilinear open tables in various sizes that can be used independently or in conjunction with each other. Each Surface table divides into a series of planes available in several finishes – from satin to glossy, reflective to veneer. As Van Duysen eloquently expressed… furniture with the graphical appearance of a Piet Mondrian painting and the sculptural form of a Donald Judd artwork.”

This combination of the simple rectilinear form with the varying aesthetics achieved through the treatment of the horizontal and vertical planes makes the Surface table so visually engaging. The Surface table’s base is a low shelf for impromptu storage. They can also be used together to create large striking asymmetric assemblages that appear visually linked.

The surface table is available in seven versions – three depths ranging from 13 – 3/4″ to 53 – 7/8″ and two widths, 47 – 1/4″ and 59″. It is available in several veneers – brushed light oak, brushed black oak, gray or smoked oak – and several satin paint finishes. Side panel and baseboard options are available in black and bright chromed steel and bronzed painted nickel.

Vincent Van Duysen

Belgium

Vincent Van Duysen is a master of simplicity. His architecture and interior projects reveal his emphasis on form, material, light, and landscape. Whether constructed of wood, brick, or concrete, his structures stimulate quiet moments of reflection and beauty, framing the user as they walk up a staircase, offering an unexpected view of the surrounding terrain, or collecting light as it comes and goes. There is vitality in every detail, even if the overall impression of his work is minimalist and stark.

The Belgian talent, who worked at Ettore Sottsass’s studio in the late 1980’s before starting his own studio in Antwerp, approaches his industrial design work in a similar way. Every piece Van Duysen creates, whether the modular Surface table for B&B Italia or the Ratio kitchen for Dada, is an extension of the interior where it will live. The designs are therefore always functional and user-friendly. They also carry the same emphasis on natural materials and simple shapes without unnecessary adornment that defines Van Duysen’s architecture.
