or Call to Order

Designed in 1959 by Franco Albini in collaboration with a long-time associate, Franca Helg, the Tre Pezzi Lounge was reissued by Cassina in 2009 as part of its I Maestri Collection.

Tre Pezzi means three pieces” in Italian. Indeed, the three upholstered elements that compose the structure of the chair are all related visually as variants of the hemisphere. The lunette horizontal seating plane gently folds over the tubular steel frame at the front of the chair and is echoed by the gently flared hemispherical armrest that engulfs its perimeter. A slightly concave lunette functions as the backrest. All three pieces” are held within a tubular steel frame that also gently curves, creating wonderful visual synergy within the overall form.

Franco Albini

Italy (1905–1977)

Born in Milan in 1905, Franco Albini's work spans across furniture design, product design, architecture, urban planning and interior design. His work was an integration of modern design and Italian craftsmanship. Through his product and furniture design, Albini celebrated the raw form of materials and transparent construction. Albini would forgo ornament and encasement of furniture, to allow the structure to be revealed. In 1939, he debuted a radio fully encased in glass to expose the inner workings. His most well-known work is the Albini Desk in 1949 for Knoll, which is still in production today. As a designer, he has collaborated with Gio Ponti, Franca Helg, as well as Helg and Bob Noorda.
