Edward van Vliet views design as traveling between dreams and reality. Before opening his own studio in 1990, Vliet studied Architecture Design, Interior and Industrial Design at Design Academy Eindhoven and HKU School of Arts. A key player on the vanguard of Dutch design, Vliet transcends aesthetic boundaries by drawing on a global blend of cultural influences. Seen is his array of work from architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, textiles and lifestyle to destination and experience design.
“My work is very much about creating a world within a world,” explains Vliet. “Elegance is all about ambiance, setting the stage for people to feel immersed in an atmosphere made even personal by being surrounded by distinctive pieces that merge colors, patterns, shapes, materials, moods, emotions, origins and more.” Develius is Vliet’s idea of the archetypal modular sofa. With its elongated seat, it’s reminiscent of a chaise longue, inviting you to luxuriate at length for hours on end. The individual sofa components, pouf, and lush, loose pillows invite you to compose your own piece of paradise. For &tradition CEO / Founder Martin Kornbek Hansen, “Vliet’s focus beyond designing pieces to creating an entire universe of experiences is easily evident in Develius. It’s the epitome of luxury. Whether you choose one fabric or a mix of textures and tones, the shape alone exudes comfort.”
