Thomas E. Alken

Danish designer Thomas E. Alken, born in Copenhagen in 1970, has left an indelible mark on the Scandinavian design landscape. A graduate of the Danish Design School and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Alken founded the design studio Format Design in 1997. Over the past two decades, he has become a prominent figure in the industry, showcasing a keen focus on the interplay between user and object.

Alken’s design philosophy is rooted in a deep understanding of functionality, with a material-driven approach that prioritizes beauty, strength, tactility, production, and environmental impact. His commitment to overseeing every aspect of the design process has led to numerous successful designs and garnered invaluable global design and production experience. As a critical player in the Scandinavian design scene, Thomas E. Alken continues to shape the future of design with his innovative and thoughtful approach.
