Sofie Refer

Sofie Refer was born in Denmark, 1974. Between 1998 — 2003 she studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Archi­tec­ture, Design and Conser­va­tion — Insti­tute of Product Design, Glass and Ceramics.

Sofie Refer believes that light­ing is the most crucial and power­ful aspect of any envi­ron­ment. Soon after grad­u­at­ing from Denmark’s Design School in 2003, she opened her Copen­hagen-based light­ing design and produc­tion company Refer + Staer, where she is Partner and Creative Direc­tor. Her simple, stream­lined designs have garnered her numer­ous awards, appear­ing in the private and commer­cial sector, such as restau­rants, hotels, night­clubs and city councils worldwide.

Driven by a passion to find new ways to play with light, Refer uses the latest tech­nol­ogy to create designs which signal Scan­di­na­vian simplic­ity with a touch of extravagance.
