or Call to Order

The Era side chair, designed by Sven Ivar Dysthe for Eikund, is an innovative chair featuring a modern material mix. Originally showcased at the Association of Applied Arts’ autumn exhibition in the mid-1950s, Sven Ivar Dysthe’s steel, wood, and leather prototype was recognized as the most exciting product of the exhibition in the Norwegian magazine Bonytt. Era is designed with organic wood and industrial steel, resulting in a versatile chair suitable for various styles and settings. The chair’s features include a black powder-coated steel frame, a steam-bent T‑shaped wooden backrest, and a light, almost floating veneer seat, providing an elegant design and comfortable form. With its stackable ability, Era combines aesthetics and pure function. It is now in production for the first time.

Sven Ivar Dysthe

Sven Ivar Dysthe is a prominent Norwegian industrial designer renowned for his contributions to furniture design. His journey in design began as an apprentice at a respected carpenter workshop in Trondheim. Encouraged by Arne Remlov, an interior architect and editor of Bonytt magazine, Dysthe applied for admission to the Royal College of Art in London. Under the guidance of furniture designer David Pye, he pursued industrial design, and during his studies, he crafted the pincushion box for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953.

After graduating in 1954, Dysthe worked for Danish architects and furniture designers Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen in Copenhagen, gaining valuable insights into Scandinavian design. Upon returning to Norway, his career flourished. Dysthe's furniture designs are characterized by elegance, modernity, and minimalism in form and material usage. He emphasized serial production, combining systematic solutions with thoughtful details. Notably, his dining chair Era showcases his innovative spirit, featuring a black powder-coated steel frame, a steam-bent T-shaped wooden backrest, and a light, almost floating veneer seat. Sven Ivar Dysthe's work is committed to creative exploration and modern techniques.
