or Call to Order

The Ry Armchair, designed by Sven Ivar Dysthe for Eikund, showcases efficient production and true craftsmanship. Crafted primarily from solid wood, the chair highlights the artistry of its creation. The side chair and armchair share many components, with minor modifications such as adding armrests. Despite the intricacies of the design, a standout feature is the connection between the backrest and the horizontal leg stretcher, demonstrating the brilliance of Dysthe’s design. The chair, with its voluminous upholstery and exceptional comfort, embodies the classic style of the 1960s. It is back after being out of production, allowing a new generation to appreciate its timeless design.

Sven Ivar Dysthe

Sven Ivar Dysthe is a prominent Norwegian industrial designer renowned for his contributions to furniture design. His journey in design began as an apprentice at a respected carpenter workshop in Trondheim. Encouraged by Arne Remlov, an interior architect and editor of Bonytt magazine, Dysthe applied for admission to the Royal College of Art in London. Under the guidance of furniture designer David Pye, he pursued industrial design, and during his studies, he crafted the pincushion box for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953.

After graduating in 1954, Dysthe worked for Danish architects and furniture designers Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen in Copenhagen, gaining valuable insights into Scandinavian design. Upon returning to Norway, his career flourished. Dysthe's furniture designs are characterized by elegance, modernity, and minimalism in form and material usage. He emphasized serial production, combining systematic solutions with thoughtful details. Notably, his dining chair Era showcases his innovative spirit, featuring a black powder-coated steel frame, a steam-bent T-shaped wooden backrest, and a light, almost floating veneer seat. Sven Ivar Dysthe's work is committed to creative exploration and modern techniques.
